How can I check whether a household electrical product complies with the safety standards?

You should purchase electrical appliances with product information (e.g. brand, model and rated voltage, etc.) and fitted with 3-pin plugs which comply with the safety requirements, unless when the appliance is fitted with a 2-pin plug which comply with safety standards and is designed to receive power supply from a shaver supply unit inside a bath room.

There is no pre-approval registration requirement for household electrical products supplied in Hong Kong.  Currently, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department operates a voluntary registration scheme which covers 24 types of household electrical products -

Extension unit Fan Hair dryer

Electrical products of the above categories can be registered under the voluntary registration scheme if they have been issued with a certificate of safety compliance in accordance with the Electrical Products (Safety) Regulation.  A list of the registered products has been posted on EMSD's website, please click here.

For electrical appliances not in the above categories, you may refer to the " Safety Tips for Buying and Using Electrical Appliances" in the Household Electrical Safety Handbook (PDF) issued by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.
